If you are on payroll, it means you are still employed by that company. Consider this as bench period. The company may not pay you the whole salary or part of it but you are still employed. This creates problem sometime. You should ask your employer to consider you as on unpaid leave or vacation. You dont have to leave the country. Few days are ok as long as you get a new job elsewhere and transfer your H1. I think 30 days is good. Your first and foremost goal is to get a job at any cost. That should happen before you are out of payroll of your current company. That means within 30 days.
Once you are out of 30 days and dont have a job, you are out of status. That means you are here illegally. Your counter starts. There is no guideline how long you can stay here like that but more than 180 days will definitely create problem for you in the long run.
Coming to H1 transfer, if you can transfer the job within 30 days, you are good. No harms done. Although sometime you get RFE to show the income for that period if W2 shows very low number. There should some sort of parity with LCA minimum wage in H1 with W2. But 30 days of non-payment should not be a big issue as long as you can prove you were employed at that time with your H1 petitioner.
If you are out of status, there is not much you can do about it except get a job soon enough. There are people who got H1 transfer without any issue. But there is a greater chance it might come up as RFE in H1 or later in GC.
If you are here more that 180 days, you are in serious trouble.
In any case, talk to a lawyer. People here in this forum are good for some basic general advice but a case like yours should be consulted with a professional.

DHS Leadership Journal Has Just Posted the Following:
I am extremely pleased to congratulate the crew of the cutter Bertholf for their first drug interdiction on one of our new national security cutters. This success demonstrates the capability of this important national security asset and directly supports the department's strategy for protecting and securing the southwest border.
The national security cutter program (http://www.uscg.mil/acquisition/NSC/) is a vital component of the Department's effort to rebuild the Coast Guard (http://www.uscg.mil/)'s fleet so that it can continue its proud history of executing important missions to support the nation's maritime security and safety while protecting our economic prosperity.

Last week I visited the cutter Dallas in a shipyard in Charleston. The Dallas, and her sister ship Gallatin, are undergoing extensive work to repair major structural and machinery problems that are the result of their age and overuse. The national security cutter program will replace these 40-year old, Vietnam era vessels with modern, capable ships to secure America.
In Wednesday's seizure off the coast of Guatemala, the crew of the Bertholf disrupted four drug smuggling speedboats at the same time with their multiple pursuit boats and helicopter. The crew successfully captured two vessels and four suspects while disrupting the other two boats.
The continued renewal of the Coast Guard fleet and use of modern technology across the department is an indispensable part of our strategy to improve the ability of DHS to secure our nation and protect its citizens.

Q : Will this affect my ability to travel?
Possibly, if you leave the country prior to the completion of the receipting process and do not have the appropriate travel documents, you may have difficulty returning to the United States.
Ok so no travel unless you have AP...right?

In Wake of Immigration Law, Calls for an Economic Boycott of Arizona - NYTimes.com (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/27/us/27arizona.html?ref=us)
La Opinin, the nations largest Spanish-language newspaper, urged a boycott in an editorial Monday, as did the Rev. Al Sharpton, and calls for such action spread to social media sites. The San Francisco city attorney and members of the Board of Supervisors said they would propose that the city not do business with the state.
They followed the lead of Representative Ral M. Grijalva, Democrat of Arizona, who had urged conventions to skip the state, though other Democrats who oppose the law, including Mayor Phil Gordon of Phoenix, pleaded for people not to punish the entire state.
Tourism and convention managers, struggling to rebound from the recession, said it was too soon to tell if the effort would have an impact, but some businesses said people were turning away from the state.
At the Arizona Inn in Tucson, the manager, Will Conroy, said that over the weekend 12 customers canceled reservations or said they would not return to the state because of the law.
Tourism officials said such accounts were not widespread, but they were concerned that the rancor was tarnishing the states image and were mindful of the boycott in the 1980s that led to Arizonas officially observing Martin Luther Kings Birthday after initially rejecting it as a holiday.

I was initially issued pp for 5 years in India. Last year in '08 when it was expiring, i sent application for renewal of passport (NY Consulate) based on my EAD. However, instead of renewing it for another 5 years they renewed it for 1 year only. When I called the office, they said that they receive tons of pp's lon EAD which can be renewed for a year only.
Did anybody face this same problem? Can I apply for new passport based on I-485 receipt and would they issue passport for another 5 or 10 years?
Thanks in advance

We filed our 485 on July 2nd 2007 at Nebraska office EB3 July 7, 2001
- The case was shifted to Texas and we received notices from Texas office with receipt date of August 27.
- Our date is now current however processing at Texas is still stuck at June 27, 2007.
- Does this mean our RD is now 08/27/07 even though it was recd. at Nebraska on 07/02/07??
Unfortunately yes - RD Aug 27, you can confirm this by looking at your receipt notice that you got from your attorney.

It amazes me how united and organized ILLEGAL immigrants are. This forum has visitors who are afraid to reveal their identities for fear of prosecution (in spite of the fact that the law protects us from that as we are not doing anything illegal) and illegal aliens are making headway every single day!

No wonder our agendas get forgotten or dropped everytime in favor of illegal aliens. After all, the squeaky wheel gets the grease! We do nothing for ourselves and do not deserve anything either. This will happen again if we keep on being mute spectators watching from the sides.

There shouldn't be any issues. The H1 visa stamp on your passport is seperate from the I-797 approval that you received, both are valid. Your wife should also have no problems getting an H4 using your current I-797. I had a freind recently who was in the exact same situation and he and his wife both didn't have any issues.

Hi,
I got appointment letter for Biometrics from USCIS. I already gave in 2007.
Why are they asking again? and I only got this, my husband and son didn't get it.
Right now I am on EAD, since last december(2009) I am not working, will there be any issues as I am the primary applicant.
Thanks
You are the primary applicant and not working? Is this ok?

They will go to ur michigan address i guess.
Online u can change the address for each receipt number of ead ,485 and ap using ar-11 form online link. or u can also call custom rep also to make sure it is reflected.FP notice they will send a copy to ur lawyer .So ask him to let you know once he gets it. sending ar-11 form itself does not change the address against the recipt numbers.

but the advantage on that is after graduation you can get an EAD/ OPT for 1 year ... can do on-campus jobs ... and some off-campus jobs
If you are any other type of visa AND been a resident of CA for atleast 12-13 months ... you may qualify for instate tuition (this i know from personal exp in CSU system)
